Talking to people and animals
GTA 6 borrows Red Dead Redemption 2's focus system: hold L2 on someone and a set of context options appears.
- People: the footage only shows basic conversation options so far, such as approaching a dealer at the start of a job.
- Animals: Jason focuses on a dog and gets three choices: scold it, pet it, or study it (R1). What "study" does is not explained yet.
- Cutscenes: the camera moves from over-the-shoulder play straight into cutscenes without a visible cut.
Combat
Shooting looks closer to a dedicated third-person shooter than any GTA before it, with clear echoes of Max Payne 3.
- Cover: characters snap to walls and fire from cover, as in GTA 5.
- Slow-motion aiming: a Dead Eye-style slow-mo lets you pick a target zone: head, knee, or the weapon in an enemy's hand to disarm them.
- Kill cams: some takedowns play as short slow-motion montages.
- Scavenging: characters pick up guns dropped by enemies.
- Hand-to-hand: Lucia fights with more varied animations than GTA 5's brawling and appears to counter attacks.
- One-handed shotgun: Lucia clears a room firing a shotgun with one hand.
- Damage: cars show damage to the bodywork, engine bay, windscreens and tyres; violence is noticeably gorier than GTA 5.
- Car shootouts: Jason leans out of a moving car to fire at a police helicopter and pursuing trucks.
Wanted level and the new HUD
The wanted meter now runs to six stars, and a small row of icons beside it shows what the police know about you.
- Six stars: GTA 5 capped at five; the footage shows four- and two-star chases with six slots on the meter.
- What the cops know: icons cover your vehicle, your face, your clothes, how many of you there are, and CCTV.
- Losing the heat: in one chase the duo burns their car in a parking lot and switches to a van. The vehicle icon disappears and the police drive straight past them.
- Takeaway: escaping becomes about changing what you look like and what you drive, not only outrunning the stars.
Stealing cars and driving
Car theft now gives you a choice of method instead of one animation.
- Two ways in: use a slim jim on the lock, or smash the window.
- The duo's car: a red late-80s sports saloon in the style of a BMW M3.
- Traffic: dense traffic, roadworks, crowded pavements and people waiting at bus stops.
- Racing: street racing with nitrous appears near the end of the reveal.
- Bikes: bicycles are visible in the world, but nobody rides one on screen yet.
Weapons, items and money
GTA 6 keeps the weapon wheel and adds a separate item wheel, closer to RDR2's satchel than GTA 5's quick menu.
- Item wheel: switches between body armour, health items and tonics.
- Two balances: the top-right HUD shows both money in the bank and cash in your wallet.
- Food heals: Jason eats on the way out of a convenience store, and it restores health.
- Drinks with effects: the apartment fridge holds two beers and a smoothie that seems to boost health and a focus meter, likely tied to slow-motion aiming. The exact stats are not shown.
Jason and Lucia
You play both protagonists, and switching between them looks faster and more grounded than GTA 5's zoom-out swap.
- Switching: works when they are side by side, for example mid-chase in the same car, and when they are apart.
- Teamwork: in one firefight Jason calls for cover fire and Lucia provides it. It is unclear whether that was scripted or a squad command.
- Romance is optional: press previews say the relationship only develops if you spend time together outside missions. Either way, they stay a crime duo.
- Couple activities: holding hands (R2) and date-style outings, such as drinks with another couple at a rooftop bar.
- Small touches: Jason holds doors open for Lucia, which happens several times in the footage.
Everyday life and activities
Downtime is a bigger part of the game, starting with the couple's small Vice City apartment.
- Apartment: lights switch on and off, the TV shows parody shows and ads, and the fridge is usable.
- Basketball: Jason shoots hoops in the driveway.
- Diving: an underwater scene with scuba gear.
- Working out: Lucia trains with trigger-based controls, so it is played, not a cutscene. Whether fitness affects stats is not confirmed.
- Oddballs: eccentric NPCs to meet, including a backyard wrestling scene.
- Phone culture: Lucia mentions Snapmatic, GTA's version of a photo-sharing app.
- Story jobs: a robbery at a diner styled on a well-known all-night waffle chain, and a bodyguard job for wealthy clients that turns into a firefight.
- Open world between missions: story scenes hand you back to free roam, with talk of joining a crew run by a character named Raul.
The world
Leonida is the largest map Rockstar has built, and the reveal shows it busy at every scale. Rockstar North's Rob Nelson gave these comparisons in press previews:
- Whole map: about twice the size of GTA 5 and three times Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Vice City: about twice the size of Los Santos; with its suburbs, about 11 times Los Santos and its surroundings.
- Density: crowded beaches, pavements and roads, with no visible drop in NPC numbers in wide shots.
- Interiors: cluttered, lived-in apartments with detailed lighting.
- Hardware: the reveal was captured on a base PS5, not a PS5 Pro. Previews report 30 fps on consoles at launch.
Music
The reveal mixes licensed tracks with an original score that is upbeat and 80s-flavoured rather than dark.
- "Let Your Love Flow" by the Bellamy Brothers plays over the opening montage.
- "People Are People" by Depeche Mode plays as the duo drives to a job.
- Whether these tracks sit on in-game radio stations is not confirmed.
Still unconfirmed
These are hints in the footage, not features we can confirm until the game is played on November 19.
- Destructible walls: an NPC is slammed through a wall in a cutscene. Player-driven destruction is not shown.
- Squad commands: the cover-fire moment may be scripted.
- "Study" on animals: the option appears but its effect is not shown.
- Fitness stats: workouts are playable, but any effect on stamina or appearance is unknown.
- Riding bikes: bicycles appear in the world but are never ridden.
- GTA Online: the reveal says nothing about multiplayer.
